VOCALENSEMBLE
[lat., Verb, Nominative Singular PPA: „burning with passion“]
about
calens vocalensemble dedicates itself to the entire spectrum of classical vocal music with dedication, precision and deep expressiveness. Founded in spring 2022, the ensemble brings together eight experienced ensemble and choral singers who regularly sing in renowned choirs such as the figure humaine kammerchor, the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Bundesjugendchor. The ensemble received formative musical impulses through workshops with VOCES8, The Gesualdo Six, Stephen Connolly and the collaboration with Salome Tendies.
In 2024, calens vocalensemble was awarded 1st place and the audience award at the 14th International a cappella contest in Leipzig. The ensemble also received the special prize from the SommerMusikAkademie Schloss Hundisburg for the best unamplified ensemble. For the 2024/2025 season, calens is a scholarship holder of the #MusikerZukunft funding program of the German Orchestra Foundation.
calens‘ repertoire includes works from the Renaissance to contemporary music as well as its own compositions and arrangements. It is a central concern of the ensemble to deal with fundamental human questions and to take up themes that have always moved people: Love, faith, hope.
calens gave its first concerts in 2023 and now performs regularly throughout Germany and internationally. The ensemble also performs as part of external concert projects: In May 2025, the ensemble took part in a concert performance of the opera Amor vincitore with Il Gusto Barocco under the direction of Jörg Halubek.
In June 2025, the ensemble‘s prizewinners‘ concert took place as part of the International Festival for Vocal Music a cappella Leipzig. In August, it performed at the DAVOS Festival in Switzerland. Further concerts are planned as part of the Stunde der Kirchenmusik in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart.
The ensemble is under the musical direction of Frederic Mattes and Franziska Bubeck.
